Staycationing (in Norfolk)

A UK seaside resort, recently - picture by Sally Parkinson

Here's a possible project for the summer (or those pesky last few weeks....)

Why not go on holiday in your home town ??
  • Visit the Tourist Information Centre and pick up some leaflets and ask the people who work there what there is to do...
  • Research the possible attractions for different groups of people: young people, families with children, elderly visitors.
  • Spend a day away from home - take a packed lunch and try to take no more than 24 pictures (the number that there used to be on an old roll of - non-digital - film...)
Links with the ideas in the Lonely Planet Guide to Experimental Travel which has a range of potential other activities to carry out listed here.

You will remember the possible KS3 scheme of work that I posted a few days ago. The idea for Year 7 was that there would be an activity in the final few weeks of the year called "School's out", which would be an exploration of modern tourist trends, and this would be followed in the firt few weeks of Year 8 by a unit called "Explorer debriefing". The idea would be to introduce some of the ideas of "Mission Explore" to students, and for them to spend some of the summer "exploring" in its wider sense....

This also links with the apparent trend for STAYCATIONING: partly driven by the "credit crunch" (if that's not an outdated term...) and the value of the £ against other currencies.
According to a recent article in the Daily Mail, there were 10 million fewer trips overseas made by Brits last year.

My local area is making an effort to attract visitors. The Norfolk Wish you were Here campaign is regularly featured in the Eastern Daily Press.
Where are your favourite UK holiday destinations ?
