A whale of a tail...

Just after Christmas, a picture on a friend's Facebook page alerted us to the body of a sperm whale which had been washed up on the beach at Old Hunstanton: about five miles from where we used to live.
This was not the first whale that had been washed up, and we have pictures of another whale at Brancaster about 4 years ago.

Over the next few days, many people went to see the whale, and they weren't always very respectful of the animal, including this story. The animal featured on the local news for a week, and was then removed from the beach once it became a health and safety risk and it became clear that a high tide would not remove the animal.
The positive side of this, however, was the impact on some shops in the town centre. They saw increased sales, and the pub next to the beach was very busy, although it was the festive period.

Tourism in Norfolk plays a vital role in keeping local business open through the winter months. The EDP published a useful list of the top attractions in East Anglia.
